SATELLITE ACADEMIES

A Satellite Academy provides talented young players with access to quality coaching and support services and will become familiar through this programme with regular training.

The commitment is intentionally small so young players are not placed under any time pressure, particularly as many will have just started secondary school. They receive a structured technical programme and basic education on nutrition, injury prevention, time management and fitness. Players are introduced to a basic fitness schedule and will be encouraged to fill in a log book to monitor how much sport they play and to follow their progress.

Cornwall currently has 4 x U13 Area Satellite Academies based around the county:

•Penzance (West)

•Pool (Mid-West)

•Newquay (Central)

•Bodmin (North)

Each academy has a Level 2 Head Coach, Assistant Coach and Team Manager/Umpire. There are approximately 20 - 25 players training in each area on a monthly basis. Competitions are organised as 4 x inter-area tournaments where 2 teams from each of the academies compete against teams from other areas.

After a year at U13 level these players, together with anyone else interested, can attend trials to go into the 2 x U14 Satellite Academies which are split between North and South. The North train at Bodmin and the South train at Pool on a fortnightly basis. 2 teams from each area compete in inter-area matches throughout the season. Players from these squads are then selected to represent the Keltic Academy at the U14 South West Regional Tournament.

COUNTY ACADEMIES

The County academy provides quality coaching and support services to challenge and extend the talented young player.

The County academy targets the very motivated talented player who has a strong desire to progress. The player must be willing to learn, be self-motivated and ready to work hard. The commitment is considerably more than the Satellite Academy and will undoubtedly require a certain amount of sacrifice. The focus is very much on the individual player’s needs and not on team play. A fitness programme will be followed at home and logbook filled in, to record progress.

Cornwall has a County Academy established which is WENA 2 (West of England Netball Academy) based at Truro College. There are approximately 20 players involved who come from across the county. Players are given education on all aspects of fitness, nutrition, time management, injury prevention. Sport Science officers from Truro College assist with the delivery of the education programme and co-ordinate the fitness testing. Along side their education programme they receive fortnightly coaching sessions on individual skills and tactical awareness. The players currently working in WENA have great opportunities to progress, as WENA is an Extension Centre to the High Performance Netball Centre at Bath.

Please see the WENA link on the website for further information.
