About Truro College Netball Academy
Truro College is a sixth form and higher education college. It provides education in ‘A’ Levels, BTEC’s, Baccalaureate, Foundation Degrees and Degree Courses. The College runs Academies in a wide range of sports.
The Netball Academy is open to all students who are interested in netball in the college. Currently there are 30 players who train regularly and compete in matches for the college.
The Academy caters for netballers of all standards. There are 3 squads who have opportunity to train together but also have discreet sessions based on experience and ability. During a college week players in the academy will have daily training sessions on strength and conditioning, core stability, speed and agility, endurance, flexibility as well as skill, tactics and match play. They also have classroom sessions on match play analysis, goal setting and other relevant topics. They have one to one interviews regularly to set personal targets for improvement and discuss how those improvements can be made and monitored.
Elite players in the Academy have chance to link to coaching and playing opportunities at the High Performance Netball Centre in Bath.
The main Aims of the Academy is to provide opportunities for Elite Performance, Personal Improvement, Enjoyment, Professional Development whilst providing Technical and Tactical education, Sport Science Education and Individual Fitness programmes.
A team of highly qualified coaches and Sport Science Officers run the education programme.
The Netball Academy in 2006/7
The academy started with a weekend training camp in which prospective netball players received training and team building opportunities. The players were involved in setting their own Code of Conduct and shaping the Ethos of the Academy.
Players from the Academy were selected for Regional Screening for England U17 and U19 squads. 5 Players have also gained places in the SW Colleges Squad and will trial for the British Colleges Squad.
The 1st and 2nd team squads both play in a South West Colleges League. Both are currently undefeated this season in their relevant divisions. The 1st team squad also play in the South West College Cup Competition. They have won the SW Division of this Competition and are currently awaiting the draw for the quarterfinals. They also won the SW College Tournament and go to Loughborough in March to play in the finals against all the best colleges in Wales and England. They are Cornwall County Schools Champions at U19 level and have just won through to National Schools Finals coming 2nd in the Regional Round of that Competition.
The Future
The Academy also provides opportunities for players to be developed as coaches, umpires and organisers. Courses are currently being organised to prepare players for England Netball Qualifications in these areas. It is hoped in the future that Academy players will help to run a Little League for young players in the Truro Area.
Other future schemes involve the setting up of a Gifted and Talented programme for young players from local schools so that they can access quality coaching at the Academy. In the summer term the prospective students for 2007–8 year will be invited to attend training sessions alongside current Academy players to make the initiation in to College Academy life a little easier.
